By following a few simple beer tasting tips you can make your tasting experience much more enjoyable and completely appreciate what each beer offers. There are numerous factors that can change the taste and aroma of a beer, including things that seem unrelated or irrelevant. The aroma, flavor, appearance, feel of the beer in your mouth, and aftertaste are all factors that require attention. Each beer should be savored.

The last thing you want to do before tasting a variety of beers is introduce overpowering flavors to your mouth that will dull your senses. Do not eat or drink anything that will over-stimulate your taste buds and refrain from smoking during the tasting session. Your senses should be on full alert. Always have plain bread, saltless crackers or water on hand to cleanse your palate between beers.

Wash your glassware with fresh water to thoroughly clean away all soapy residue that might alter the taste of the beer. Even though beer is best served cold and most people freeze their mugs, do not freeze your mugs when using them for tasting. Besides the fact that the aromas emitted will be lessened, beer that is too cold will numb your taste buds.

By assertively pouring the beer you not only create a good head, but you also help release all the distinctive aromas of the beer. Rich and bitter beers should be kept for last, because these types usually influence the tastes of sweeter, milder beers. You want to be able to detect subtle flavors.

As your tasting session progresses the alcohol you consume can affect your ability to identify certain differences between the aromas and flavors. You should always pay attention to alcohol levels and start with the beers that have lower levels.

Each part of your mouth is sensitive to different tastes; sensory receptors on the tip of your tongue are sensitive to sweet flavors, while bitter flavors are detected at the back of your tongue. Let your tongue distribute the beer throughout your mouth before swallowing. The length of time the aftertaste of each beer lingers will vary. Some aftertastes are satisfyingly good, while others are bad. Pay attention to these tastes as they add to the total experience of beer tasting.

Make sure you are as observant as possible. Do not form an opinion if you have not yet tasted the beer; this will influence the way you react to the aromas and flavors. By using these beer tasting tips you can easily create an unforgettable experience.
